How Long Does a Phone Repair Take?
Your phone screen just cracked, your battery is dying by lunchtime, or your charging port has given up. The first question on your mind (after “how much?”) is usually “how long will I be without my phone?”
The good news is that most common phone repairs are same-day jobs. Here’s a realistic breakdown of what to expect.
Repair Times by Type
Screen Replacement – About an Hour
A phone screen replacement is our most common repair. For most iPhone and Samsung models, we can have a new screen fitted and tested in about an hour. The process involves carefully removing the damaged display, transferring components like the earpiece and front camera to the new assembly, fitting it, and then testing everything – touch response, display quality, Face ID, and brightness.
Battery Replacement – About an Hour
An iPhone battery replacement typically takes about an hour. The phone needs to be opened, the old battery carefully removed (they’re held in with adhesive strips that need patience), the new battery fitted, and then the phone reassembled and tested. We check the cycle count and capacity before and after to make sure the new battery is performing correctly.
Charging Port Repair – 15 Minutes to an Hour
This one varies. Sometimes the problem is just compacted lint in the port – a professional clean takes about 15 minutes and you’re sorted. If the charging port itself needs replacing, that’s about an hour. On many phones the charging port is a separate flex cable that can be swapped without disturbing the rest of the internals.
Water Damage – Same-Day Assessment, 24 to 48 Hours for Full Repair
Water damage repair is the one exception to our fast turnaround. We can assess the phone the same day you bring it in, but the actual repair process takes longer. The phone needs to be carefully disassembled, cleaned ultrasonically, and dried thoroughly. Rushing this step risks corrosion developing later.
Most water damage repairs take 24 to 48 hours. We’ll give you an honest assessment upfront – including whether the phone is worth repairing at all. Phones that arrive quickly after the incident, powered off, with no charging attempts, have a significantly higher recovery rate.
Back Glass – Same Day
iPhone back glass repair is typically a same-day job. The exact time depends on your model – newer iPhones (14 onwards) have a serviceable back glass that’s quicker to swap, while older models (iPhone 8 through 13) need a full housing replacement where all internal components are transferred to a new chassis. Either way, we’ll confirm a time when you bring the phone in.
Samsung Repairs – One to Two Hours
Most common Samsung repairs (screen, battery, charging port) take one to two hours when we have the part in stock. We carry parts for the most popular Galaxy S and A series models. For less common Samsung models or specific parts we need to order, turnaround is usually one to two working days.
What Affects How Long Your Repair Takes
- Part availability – we stock parts for the most popular iPhone and Samsung models. Less common phones or very new releases might need parts ordered in, which could add a day or two
- Repair complexity – a straightforward screen swap is predictable. A phone that’s been dropped in the sea with a cracked screen and water damage is a bigger job
- Queue – if several people walked in before you, there’s a short wait. We work through repairs efficiently and will always give you an honest time estimate when you arrive
Walk-In vs Appointment
You don’t need an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome during our opening hours and most repairs start shortly after you arrive. If you want to guarantee a specific time slot – especially during busy periods like the start of university term – give us a call to arrange a time.
What to Do While You Wait
Our shop is at 1 City Rd, about a two-minute walk from the town centre. If your repair is going to take an hour or so, you’ve got plenty of options. Grab a coffee, browse the charity shops on Market Street, or take a quick walk along The Scores. We’ll let you know when your repair is done.
Compare That to Official Repair Channels
Here’s what happens if you go through Apple or Samsung’s official repair routes:
- Apple – the nearest Apple Store is in Edinburgh. You’ll need to book a Genius Bar appointment (often days in advance), travel there, and then either wait or leave the phone. Many repairs require posting the phone to a repair centre. Expect 3 to 7 business days without your phone
- Samsung – Samsung’s mail-in repair service typically takes 3 to 5 business days, not counting postage time. You pack your phone, send it off, wait, and hope it comes back fixed
- With us – walk in, get it fixed, walk out. Same day for most repairs
For students in St Andrews especially, being without a phone for a week isn’t realistic. It’s your alarm clock, your map, your lecture recorder, your group chat, your two-factor authentication for everything. You need it back fast.
