iPhone Logic Board Repair in St Andrews. Your Phone Saved, Your Data Kept

Your iPhone is dead. Completely dead. Or it turns on but gets stuck on the Apple logo. Or it restarts in a loop every few seconds. Or the screen is black but you can feel it vibrate. You have tried every reset combination and nothing works. If this sounds familiar, the problem is almost certainly the logic board. The brain of your iPhone. And you are probably being told by other shops that the phone is beyond repair.

It might not be. At Repair St Andrews, we do component-level logic board repair using micro-soldering equipment. That means we do not just swap entire boards. We diagnose and replace the individual tiny components that have failed. We have been doing board-level repairs at our 1 City Rd workshop since 2011, and we have brought back phones that other shops had written off.

Common Logic Board Problems We Fix

No Power / Dead Phone

The iPhone shows no signs of life at all. No response to charging, no vibration, no screen activity. On iPhone 13 and 14 models, this is commonly caused by a failed power management IC. The chip that controls how electricity flows through the board. A blown capacitor on a main power rail or a severed trace from drop damage can also kill the phone completely.

Boot Loop / Random Restarts

The phone starts, shows the Apple logo, then restarts endlessly. Or reboots randomly during normal use. On iPhone 13 and 14 models, this can be caused by an SMC panic fault where a sensor or component on the board reports abnormal readings, forcing a restart. NAND storage faults, power rail shorts, and baseband processor failures can all cause boot loops on modern iPhones.

No Signal / SOS Only

The phone works fine for everything except making calls or connecting to mobile data. You see "Searching. " or "SOS Only" in the status bar. The Qualcomm baseband modem chip or its associated components have failed, often due to a drop or flexion damage. This is a common board-level fault on iPhone 13 through 16 models.

No Backlight

The screen appears completely black but you can faintly see the display if you shine a torch at it. The backlight driver IC on the logic board has failed. This circuit operates at higher voltages than the rest of the board, making it particularly vulnerable to liquid damage and power surges. This is one of our most common micro-soldering repairs across all iPhone models.

Charging IC Failure

The iPhone will not charge, only charges intermittently, or gets extremely hot when plugged in. Even with a known-good cable and a working charging port. This points to a failed charging IC on the logic board (the Tristar or Hydra chip, depending on the model). On newer iPhone 15 and 16 models with USB-C, the charging controller is paired to the board and more complex to replace, but we have the equipment and donor boards to handle these repairs.

// OUR PROCESS

Our Logic Board Repair Process

Logic board repair is precision work. Here is how we approach it.

Advanced Diagnostics

Logic board diagnosis is detective work. We start by measuring voltages and current draw on the board's power rails using a DC power supply and ammeter. The pattern of current draw when the phone tries to boot tells us a lot. It is like reading an ECG for a phone. We then use a thermal camera to identify components that are overheating (drawing too much current) and a multimeter to trace signal paths and check for shorts. This diagnostic process can take 30 minutes to an hour, but it is essential. You cannot fix what you have not identified.

Micro-Soldering Repair

Once we have identified the faulty component, we work under a high-magnification stereo microscope using precision soldering equipment. The components on an iPhone logic board are incredibly small. Some are less than a millimetre across. And are soldered with lead-free solder that requires precise temperature control. We remove the failed component, clean the pads, and solder a replacement. For ball-grid array (BGA) chips like the power management IC or baseband processor, this involves reballing the chip (applying new solder balls to the underside) and reflowing it onto the board at the correct temperature profile.

Full Functional Testing

After the repair, we reassemble the phone with a known-good screen and battery and test every function: power-on, booting to home screen, touchscreen, cameras, cellular signal, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Face ID or Touch ID, speakers, microphone, charging, and sensors. Logic board issues can affect unexpected functions, so thorough testing is essential. We also run the phone for an extended period to confirm the repair is stable under sustained use.

Turnaround Time

Logic board repair is the most complex type of phone repair, and we do not rush it. Typical turnaround is two to five working days depending on the nature of the fault and whether replacement components need to be sourced. Some straightforward issues. A blown backlight filter, for example. Can be done the same day. More complex problems involving multiple failed components or rare chips take longer.

We keep you informed throughout. If at any point during the repair we discover that the damage is more extensive than initially diagnosed, we will contact you to discuss options before doing any additional work.

For simpler repairs like a cracked display, see our iPhone screen repair service. Most screen replacements are done within the hour.

Logic Board Repair Pricing

Because every logic board fault is different, we cannot give a one-size-fits-all price. Costs depend on the complexity of the diagnosis, the number of components that need replacing, and the cost of the replacement parts. A simple backlight repair is at the lower end. Replacing a power management IC or baseband chip is in the mid range. Multiple component failures or BGA rework on the main processor sit at the higher end.

We always provide a full quote after diagnosis, before starting any repair work. If the repair would cost more than the phone is worth, we will tell you honestly and discuss alternatives. Including data recovery from the phone’s storage.

If your main concern is saving photos and files, see our data recovery service. Logic board faults are often caused by water damage. We handle both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you recover data from a dead iPhone with a logic board fault?

In many cases, yes. If the NAND (storage) chip is intact. Which it usually is, even on phones with serious logic board damage. The data is still physically present on the board. Sometimes we can repair the board enough to boot the phone and perform a backup, even if it is not viable as a long-term daily device. In other cases, we can extract data directly from the NAND chip. Let us know if data recovery is your main goal, and we will prioritise that in our approach. See our data recovery service for more details.

Other repair shops said my phone cannot be fixed. Can you still help?

Possibly. Most repair shops do not do board-level work. They swap entire components (screens, batteries, charging ports) but do not have the equipment or training for micro-soldering. When they say “cannot be fixed,” they often mean “we cannot fix it.” That does not mean it is impossible. We cannot guarantee success. Some boards are genuinely beyond repair. But we have a good track record of recovering phones that other shops have turned away. The diagnostic fee is affordable, and if we cannot fix it, you do not pay for a repair. Get in touch for a no-obligation assessment.

Is the repair permanent, or will the problem come back?

A properly executed micro-soldering repair is permanent. We use quality replacement components and proper soldering techniques. The repaired joint is just as reliable as the factory original. Some logic board issues, however, are caused by a design weakness in the phone itself. For example, certain iPhone 13 and 14 models are prone to baseband faults from flexion damage. In those cases, we reinforce the repair area to reduce the chance of recurrence, but we will always be honest if a particular fault has a history of coming back.

How much of the phone gets disassembled for a logic board repair?

Everything. The logic board sits at the centre of the iPhone, beneath the screen, cameras, battery, and various flex cables. To access it, we need to remove every other component. This is another reason why logic board repair takes longer than other fixes. It involves a complete teardown and reassembly, with testing at each stage.

How much does logic board repair cost?

It varies widely because every logic board fault is unique. A straightforward repair like a blown backlight driver or a single failed capacitor sits at the lower end of the scale. Replacing a major IC. Such as the power management chip, baseband processor, or a paired USB-C charging controller on newer models. Costs more because the components and the precision work involved are more complex. We always diagnose first and give you an exact quote before starting any repair work. If the cost would exceed the value of the phone, we will tell you honestly and discuss alternatives like data recovery.

Can you fix an iPhone that got extremely hot?

Extreme heat can damage logic board components. Particularly the battery management circuit, processor thermal paste bonds, and solder joints. If your iPhone overheated and stopped working, we can diagnose whether the heat caused component failures on the board. In many cases, the damaged components can be replaced via micro-soldering. Heat damage is often related to battery failure, so we will check both the board and battery condition.

Is logic board repair worth it on an older iPhone?

It depends on your priorities. If the phone contains irreplaceable photos, messages, or data, then repairing the board to recover that data is almost always worth it regardless of the phone’s age. For daily use, we will give you an honest comparison between the repair cost and the value of the phone, so you can make an informed decision. Sometimes a board repair on an older iPhone is still the most cost-effective option compared to buying a replacement.
