iPhone Back Glass Repair in St Andrews. Look Like New Again

The back of your iPhone looks like a car windscreen after a hailstorm. You bought a case the day after it happened, but you know the damage is there. And every time you take the case off, there is that sickening crunch of loose glass fragments. Besides looking terrible, cracked back glass exposes the wireless charging coil and internal components to dust and moisture. It also makes the phone harder to sell or trade in when you eventually upgrade.

At Repair St Andrews, we do back glass repairs properly. On newer iPhones (iPhone 14 and later), Apple redesigned the back glass as a serviceable part that can be removed and replaced directly. We carry genuine replacement glass for these models and the repair is quicker and more affordable. On older models (iPhone 8 through iPhone 13), the back glass was permanently bonded to the frame and was never designed to come off, so we swap the full rear housing using Grade A parts pulled from recycled phones. Every component is transferred into a housing that looks and feels factory-new. Either way, the result is the same: no gaps, no compromise, and a phone that looks like it just left the factory. We have been doing this at 1 City Rd since 2011, and we cover every iPhone model with a glass back.

Common iPhone Back Glass Issues

Shattered Back Panel From Drops

The rear glass on iPhones is tough, but when it breaks, it tends to shatter comprehensively. Even with a case, a corner-first impact onto a hard surface can crack the entire rear panel.

Cracked Camera Lens Cover

Sometimes the rear camera glass cracks while the main back panel stays intact. This exposes the camera lens to dust and moisture, which quickly degrades photo quality. We can replace the camera lens cover separately in most cases.

Glass Fragments Falling Out

Once the back cracks, small pieces start detaching. This is both annoying and a minor hazard, as the glass edges are sharp enough to nick your fingers.

Wireless Charging Stopped Working

If the back glass is badly shattered, the wireless charging coil sitting just beneath it can be damaged or displaced. Replacing the back panel and checking the coil usually restores wireless charging.

// OUR PROCESS

Our Back Glass Repair Process

We take a different approach to most shops. Here is why, and how we do it.

Assessment

We examine the damage and identify your iPhone model to determine the right repair approach. On most models the back glass is bonded permanently to the frame and was never designed to be replaced separately. On some newer models Apple has made it a serviceable part. Either way, we check whether the camera lenses, wireless charging coil, or frame have also been affected, and we confirm the colour and condition of your current housing.

Glass Replacement or Housing Swap

For newer iPhones (iPhone 14 onwards), Apple made the back glass a serviceable part. We remove the damaged glass and fit a genuine replacement panel. The repair is faster and more affordable than a full housing swap, and the result is a perfect factory finish. For older models (iPhone 8 through iPhone 13), the back glass was permanently bonded to the chassis. On these phones we replace the entire rear housing using Grade A parts pulled from recycled phones. They look and feel brand new. Every internal component is carefully transferred: logic board, battery, cameras, charging port, speakers, and all flex cables. This gives a factory finish with no gaps around the camera, no risk of heat or laser damage to internals, and a result that is indistinguishable from a new phone.

Testing and Quality Check

Once everything is transferred, we test every function: wireless charging (Qi and MagSafe where applicable), cameras focusing correctly with no dust behind the lens, NFC for Apple Pay, all buttons and speakers, and a full seal check to make sure there are no gaps or raised edges. The result is a phone that looks, feels, and functions exactly like it did when it left the factory.

Turnaround Time

A full housing swap involves transferring every internal component, so it takes longer than a simple screen or battery repair. Turnaround is typically same-day for most models, but we will confirm a time when you bring the phone in. Because we need to source the correct housing in the right colour for your model, it is worth calling ahead on 01334 478866 so we can have the right part ready for you.

Walk-ins welcome during our opening hours: Monday to Friday 09:30 to 17:30, Saturday 10:00 to 17:00.

Need the front fixed too? See our iPhone screen repair service. We can do both front and back in the same visit. We also offer battery replacement while the phone is open.

Back Glass Repair Pricing

Pricing depends on the iPhone model and the availability of the housing in your colour. Because we use Grade A pulled housings rather than cheap aftermarket glass, the parts cost more. But the result is a factory-quality finish that will not cause problems down the line. It is still significantly cheaper than Apple’s own back glass service, which on some models can cost nearly as much as a new phone.

We stock housings in all the standard Apple colours for most models. If you want a colour change, just ask. We can often accommodate it depending on what we have in stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you replace the full housing instead of just the glass?

On most iPhone models, the back glass was never designed to be removed and replaced separately. Apple bonded it permanently to the chassis with industrial adhesive. Shops that try to replace just the glass have to either heat the phone to extreme temperatures or use a laser to burn through the adhesive. Both methods risk damaging the wireless charging coil, battery, and other internal components. Even when the glass comes off cleanly, aftermarket replacement panels rarely fit as precisely as the original, leaving gaps around the camera module where dust and dirt get inside and damage the lens over time. A full housing swap avoids all of these problems. We use Grade A housings pulled from recycled phones, transfer every component across, and the result is a factory finish with zero compromise.

What about shops that offer cheap back glass replacement?

Be careful. Shops that advertise cheap back glass replacement are usually peeling off the old glass with heat or a laser and sticking on an aftermarket panel. There are several problems with this approach. The extreme heat or laser can damage the battery, wireless charging coil, and other internal parts. The replacement glass often leaves a visible gap around the camera cutout, which lets dust and dirt inside. We regularly see phones where this has damaged the camera. And any replacement glass that carries the Apple logo is technically an intellectual property infringement. We do things differently. A full housing swap gives you a genuine, factory-quality result without any of these risks.

What about newer iPhones where Apple made the back glass removable?

Yes, from the iPhone 14 onwards Apple redesigned the back glass as a serviceable part that can be removed and replaced without swapping the full housing. We carry genuine replacement glass panels for these models, and the repair is quicker and more affordable than a housing swap. For older iPhones (iPhone 8 through iPhone 13), the back glass was permanently bonded to the chassis, so a full housing swap using Grade A pulled parts is still the best approach. We will assess your model when you bring it in and recommend the right repair method.

Will replacing the housing affect my iPhone's water resistance?

We re-seal everything with adhesive that restores a solid barrier against dust and casual splashes. As with any repair, the factory-level IP68 rating cannot be officially guaranteed, but the seal we apply provides good everyday protection. Because we are using a complete housing rather than trying to bond glass onto a damaged frame, the seal is actually more reliable than what most glass-only repairs achieve.

Can you match the exact colour of my iPhone?

Yes, we stock housings in all the standard Apple colours for each generation. Whether your phone is Midnight, Starlight, Product Red, Sierra Blue, Deep Purple, Natural Titanium, or any other finish, we carry matching replacements. Some special or limited colours may need to be ordered, which typically takes one to two working days. For unusual or custom colours, get in touch and we will see what we can source.

My back glass is cracked but everything else works fine. Do I really need to repair it?

It depends on how you use your phone. If you always keep it in a case and are not planning to sell it, cracked back glass is mostly a cosmetic issue. However, there are practical reasons to fix it: the cracks compromise the phone’s dust and water resistance, loose glass fragments can scratch surfaces and nick your fingers, and a cracked back significantly reduces the resale or trade-in value. If you are planning to upgrade and sell or trade in your current phone, fixing the back glass beforehand almost always pays for itself in the higher resale price.

Can you fix just the camera lens without replacing the full housing?

In most cases, yes. If only the camera lens cover is cracked and the main back panel is intact, we can replace just the lens glass. This is a quicker and more affordable repair than a full housing swap. Bring the phone in and we will assess whether a lens-only repair is possible for your specific model.

Does a housing swap affect MagSafe?

No. The replacement housing includes the MagSafe magnet array already in the correct position, so MagSafe accessories. Chargers, wallets, cases. Attach and align exactly as they should. We test MagSafe charging after every repair to confirm it is working properly.

What does "Grade A pulled part" mean?

It means the housing comes from a genuine iPhone that has been recycled. “Grade A” means it is in excellent cosmetic condition. No scratches, dents, or marks. It looks and feels identical to a brand-new housing because it is a genuine Apple part, not an aftermarket copy. This is why the finish is indistinguishable from a new phone.
