iPad Screen Repair in St Andrews. Your iPad, Good as New

Your iPad screen is cracked and you are trying to decide whether to fix it or just buy a new one. The screen still works. Sort of. But there are glass fragments lifting at the edges, the touch is unreliable near the cracks, and you are worried about your kids cutting their fingers on it. Or maybe the display is completely dead after a drop, showing nothing but a black void or psychedelic coloured lines. Either way, your iPad is not doing its job any more.

Repair St Andrews has been fixing iPad screens since the first generation iPad Air. We repair every current and recent iPad model. IPad, iPad Air, iPad Pro, and iPad Mini. At our workshop on 1 City Rd, right beside the West Port. iPad screen repairs are more involved than phone screen repairs due to the larger size and adhesive-heavy construction, but we have the tools, the parts, and the experience to do them well.

Common iPad Screen Problems We Fix

Cracked Glass

Cracked glass with working display. The glass is shattered but you can still see the screen image and the touch mostly works. On older iPads (non-laminated displays), the glass digitiser and the LCD are separate components, which means we can sometimes replace just the glass. On newer iPads with laminated displays (most iPad Air 2 onwards and all iPad Pros), the glass and display are fused together and we replace the full assembly.

Dead or Discoloured Display

Dead or discoloured display. The screen is black, has coloured lines, shows white patches, or displays distorted images. The LCD or LED backlight has been damaged by impact and needs a full screen replacement.

Unresponsive Touch

Unresponsive touch. The display looks fine but the iPad does not respond to touch input, or only responds in certain areas. The digitiser layer is damaged.

Lifting or Separating Screen

Lifting or separating screen. The screen is physically pulling away from the iPad's frame. This is often caused by a swelling battery pushing the screen outward from inside, which needs both a screen reseat and a battery replacement.

Apple Pencil Issues

Apple Pencil not working on part of the screen. If Apple Pencil input is dead in specific areas but finger touch works, the digitiser may have partial damage affecting the Pencil's more precise input method.

// OUR PROCESS

Our iPad Screen Repair Process

iPad screens require more care than phone screens due to the larger glass area and adhesive construction.

Step 1: Model Identification and Assessment

iPads look very similar across generations, but the internal design varies significantly. We identify your exact model (the model number is engraved in small text on the back), assess the screen damage, determine whether you need a glass-only or full-assembly replacement, and check for secondary damage. Particularly battery swelling, which is common in iPads and can cause screen separation. You get a clear quote before we start.

Step 2: Screen Removal and Replacement

iPad screens are bonded to the aluminium frame with strong adhesive and require controlled heating to soften the glue before the glass can be safely separated. On iPads with cracked glass, this process requires extra care because broken glass is fragile and can shatter further during removal. We use a combination of heat pads and precision tools to lift the screen without damaging the LCD beneath (on non-laminated models) or the home button, Touch ID sensor, and cameras around the edges. The new screen is connected, tested, and sealed with fresh adhesive.

Step 3: Full Functionality Check

After the new screen is fitted, we test everything: touch response across the entire display (especially important on the larger iPad Pro models), Apple Pencil compatibility where applicable, home button and Touch ID function, Face ID on iPad Pro models that use it, front camera, ambient light sensor, and display brightness at all levels. The iPad is then left under light pressure while the adhesive cures for a secure bond.

Turnaround Time

iPad screen repairs typically take one to three hours, depending on the model and whether it has a laminated or non-laminated display. iPad Pro models with Face ID and the more complex internal layout take the longest. We also allow time for the adhesive to cure properly, which ensures the screen stays put long-term. If you drop the iPad off in the morning, it is usually ready for collection by the afternoon.

iPad Screen Repair Pricing

iPad screen costs vary depending on the model and generation. Standard iPads (the basic model) are the most affordable to repair. iPad Mini screens are moderately priced. iPad Air screens are in the mid range. iPad Pro screens. Especially the 12.9-inch models. Are the most expensive because the displays are larger, use more advanced technology (ProMotion, Liquid Retina XDR), and the parts cost more to source.

We always quote the specific price for your model before starting work. The quote covers the screen, the labour, and the testing. Everything included.

Frequently Asked Questions

My iPad screen is cracked but still works. Is it worth repairing?

That depends on how you use the iPad and what model it is. If it is a current or recent model that you use daily. For work, university, or as a family device. Then yes, a screen repair is almost always worth it. The repair costs a fraction of a replacement iPad and restores it to like-new condition. If it is an older model that you only use occasionally, the cost-benefit shifts. We will give you an honest opinion: if the repair would cost more than the iPad is worth, we will tell you.

Can you repair the screen on an iPad Pro with Face ID?

Yes. iPad Pro models with Face ID (2018 onwards) have the TrueDepth camera system along the top edge of the screen. During a screen replacement, we carefully transfer the Face ID components from the old screen assembly, ensuring Face ID continues to work after the repair. This is delicate work because the Face ID flex cables are fragile, but it is a repair we do regularly and successfully.

My iPad screen is lifting away from the frame. Is that a screen problem?

Usually not. The most common cause of an iPad screen separating from the frame is a swollen battery pushing the screen outward from the inside. If you notice a gap forming between the screen and the frame, especially if the iPad is more than two or three years old, bring it in promptly. A swollen battery should not be ignored. We will replace the battery and reseat (or replace, if the glass was damaged during separation) the screen. See our iPad battery replacement page for more information.

Do you repair iPads used by schools and universities?

Yes, and we see quite a few. St Andrews has a large student population and several schools that use iPads for teaching. We repair iPads regardless of whether they are personal, school-issued, or university-owned. If you are a school or institution with multiple iPads needing repair, get in touch and we can discuss bulk pricing. Call us on 01334 478866.

Is an iPad screen repair more expensive than a phone screen?

Generally yes, because iPad screens are larger and the parts cost more. The standard iPad and iPad Mini are the most affordable to repair. iPad Air sits in the mid range. iPad Pro screens. Especially the 12.9-inch models. Are the most expensive because of the advanced display technology. That said, even the most expensive iPad screen repair costs significantly less than buying a new iPad.

Can you fit a screen protector after the repair?

Yes, and we recommend it. A tempered glass screen protector is the single best investment to prevent future screen damage. We can fit one for you when you collect the iPad. We carry protectors for all current iPad models.

Do you repair iPad screens with Apple Pencil issues?

Yes. If your Apple Pencil works on some parts of the screen but not others, or has become inaccurate after a crack, a screen replacement usually resolves the issue. The Apple Pencil relies on the digitiser layer in the screen, and damage to that layer causes the Pencil-specific problems. After fitting a new screen, we test Apple Pencil compatibility to confirm everything is working.
