The MacBook 13-inch A1181 from Mid 2009 was one of the last of Apple's traditional multi-part polycarbonate MacBooks before the switch to the unibody design. It featured a 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of DDR3 RAM and a 160GB hard drive, with a 13.3-inch glossy display. The A1181 is infamous for its cracking palm rest issue, where stress fractures develop in the white plastic around the trackpad and along the front edge of the top case - Apple ran a repair programme for this defect, but out-of-warranty units still frequently present with this problem. Hard drive failure is extremely common given the age of these machines, and an SSD upgrade is the single best improvement an owner can make. The original battery will have degraded far beyond usable capacity and must be replaced for any portable use. The plastic casing can yellow significantly over time, and the bottom case clips that secure the battery and RAM access panel are prone to breaking. Overheating from dried-out thermal compound causes high fan speeds and potential shutdowns. The optical drive mechanism frequently fails on units of this vintage.
