iPhone Back Glass Repair – Everything You Need to Know

You’ve cracked the back of your iPhone. The front screen is fine, the phone works perfectly, but there’s a spiderweb of cracks across the rear glass. Now you’re wondering – does it actually matter, and what does it cost to fix?

Here’s everything you need to know about iPhone back glass repair, including why the repair is different depending on which iPhone you have.

Why Do iPhones Have Glass Backs?

Every iPhone since the iPhone 8 (released in 2017) has a glass back. That’s not a design choice made purely for aesthetics – it’s functional. Wireless charging requires a non-metallic back panel. Aluminium blocks the electromagnetic field that wireless chargers use, so Apple switched to glass.

The trade-off is obvious. Glass cracks. And unlike the front screen, most people don’t put a protector on the back of their phone.

The Repair Depends on Your iPhone Model

This is the most important thing to understand about back glass repair. Apple changed the design significantly with the iPhone 14, and it affects how the repair is done.

iPhone 8 through iPhone 13: Full Housing Replacement

On these models, the back glass was never designed to be removed or replaced separately. Apple bonded it permanently to the phone’s frame with industrial-strength adhesive. It was meant to last the life of the phone.

That means the proper repair is a full housing replacement – the entire rear chassis is swapped for a new one, and all your phone’s internal components are carefully transferred across. This includes the cameras, buttons, charging port, and all the internal hardware.

It takes longer than a screen repair, but the result is a phone that looks and functions like new. The replacement housing includes the correct colour, the MagSafe magnet array (where applicable), and all the external fittings.

What About Shops Offering Cheap Back Glass Replacement on Older iPhones?

Be cautious. Some shops advertise cheap back glass repair on iPhone 8-13 models using laser machines or heat to peel off the old glass. The problem is the glass was never meant to come off. What you often get is a thin aftermarket panel stuck over the old adhesive residue. It doesn’t sit flush, it doesn’t seal properly, and it can affect wireless charging and MagSafe alignment.

We do the full housing swap because it’s the only way to get a result that’s genuinely as good as new.

iPhone 14 Onwards: Serviceable Back Glass

From the iPhone 14, Apple redesigned the back glass as a removable, serviceable part. This was a big change. The glass can be properly removed and replaced without swapping the entire housing.

This makes the repair faster and more affordable. We remove the damaged glass and fit a replacement panel. It’s a cleaner job and the end result is excellent.

Does a Cracked Back Actually Affect Your Phone?

You might be tempted to just live with it. A cracked back doesn’t stop you making calls or using apps. But there are real consequences to leaving it.

Water Resistance Is Compromised

Your iPhone’s IP68 water resistance rating depends on all the seals being intact. A crack in the back glass is a direct path for water and moisture to reach the internals. In St Andrews – between the coastal air, the rain, and the general dampness – your phone is exposed to moisture constantly.

A cracked back today could easily become water damage tomorrow.

Wireless Charging and MagSafe Issues

If the crack runs across the wireless charging coil area in the centre of the back panel, wireless charging can become unreliable or stop completely. MagSafe accessories may also not align or attach properly if the glass is damaged in that area.

Resale Value Drops

If you ever plan to sell or trade in your iPhone, a cracked back will knock a serious amount off the value. Trade-in programmes and second-hand buyers both penalise cosmetic damage heavily. The cost of the repair often pays for itself in better resale value.

It Gets Worse Over Time

Cracks spread. What starts as a single line from a corner impact gradually spreads into a web as the phone flexes in your pocket and takes minor bumps. Small glass fragments can also start to come loose, which is uncomfortable to hold.

Apple’s Price vs Independent Repair

Apple charges a flat fee for back glass repair that varies by model. For recent iPhones, their prices can be steep – sometimes not far off the cost of a refurbished phone.

The nearest Apple Store to St Andrews is in Edinburgh – an hour-plus drive, a Genius Bar appointment booked days in advance, and potentially leaving your phone with them for days.

At Repair St Andrews, we carry out the same repair for less, usually on the same day. No appointment needed – just walk in.

Should You Repair or Just Use a Case?

A case will hide the crack and prevent it from getting worse. But it won’t restore water resistance, it won’t fix wireless charging issues, and it won’t improve resale value. If you’re planning to keep the phone for another year or more, the repair is worth it.

If you’re upgrading in a month anyway, a case might be the pragmatic choice. We’ll always give you an honest recommendation based on your situation.

What About the Camera Lens?

If only the camera lens cover is cracked and the main back panel is intact, that’s usually a separate, quicker repair. We can replace the lens cover without needing a full housing swap or back glass replacement. Worth knowing – because a cracked camera lens will show in every photo you take.
