The 250GB mechanical hard drive is the most critical failure point in a machine approaching 18 years old - these drives are well past any reasonable service life. The NVIDIA 8600M GT is notoriously affected by defective solder bumps (a manufacturing defect acknowledged by NVIDIA), causing widespread GPU failures with visual artefacts and complete display loss. Apple ran an extended repair programme but it ended years ago. The removable battery means third-party cells remain available.
