Printer ink cartridges in St Andrews - Epson compatible ink cartridge pack

Compatible vs Genuine. What’s the Difference?

When it comes to printer ink, you have got two options: genuine (OEM) cartridges made by the printer manufacturer, or compatible cartridges made by third-party companies to fit the same printer.

Genuine cartridges are guaranteed to work perfectly with your printer. They are manufactured to the printer maker’s exact specifications and produce consistent colour accuracy and print quality. The downside? They cost more. Sometimes significantly more.

Compatible cartridges are designed to be drop-in replacements at a lower price. Quality varies widely between brands, which is why we only stock compatible cartridges from manufacturers we trust. The ones we sell produce excellent print quality that is indistinguishable from genuine cartridges for everyday printing. Documents, emails, essays, and standard photos.

Our honest recommendation? For everyday printing. Essays, documents, web pages, emails. Compatible cartridges are brilliant value and we would recommend them to most customers. For professional photography or colour-critical work, genuine cartridges give you the most reliable colour accuracy. Either way, we stock both and we will help you decide which makes sense for your needs.

Students & Local Businesses

With thousands of students at the University of St Andrews, we sell a lot of printer ink. Essays, dissertations, lecture notes, lab reports, presentation handouts. The printing does not stop. We know the deadline panic. We know the 11pm realisation that the cartridge is empty. That is why we keep extended stock of the most commonly used cartridges, especially during exam season and coursework deadlines.

For local businesses, we stock ink cartridges for the printers you actually use. If you get through cartridges regularly, let us know what printer model you have and we can make sure your cartridge is always in stock when you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out which cartridge my printer uses?

The easiest way is to check the model name on the front of your printer (e.g., “HP DeskJet 2720” or “Canon PIXMA TS3350”) and call us on 01334 478866. We will tell you which cartridge you need and whether we have it. Alternatively, bring your old cartridge in and we will match it. The cartridge number is usually printed on a label on the cartridge itself.

Are compatible cartridges as good as genuine ones?

For everyday printing. Documents, essays, emails, web pages. The compatible cartridges we stock are excellent. Most people cannot tell the difference. For professional photo printing where colour accuracy is critical, genuine cartridges are the safer bet. We stock both, and we will give you an honest recommendation based on what you are printing.

My printer says the cartridge is empty but I just replaced it. What's wrong?

This is usually a chip recognition issue. Modern printer cartridges have a small electronic chip that communicates with the printer. If the chip is not making good contact, the printer will not recognise the cartridge. Try removing the cartridge, cleaning the contacts gently with a dry cloth, and reinserting it. If it still does not work, bring the cartridge back and we will swap it out or help troubleshoot the issue.

Do you buy back or recycle empty cartridges?

We do not buy back empty cartridges, but you are welcome to bring them in for recycling. Many cartridge manufacturers also run their own recycling schemes. Some even include a prepaid return envelope in the box. Recycling printer cartridges keeps plastic out of landfill and allows the materials to be reclaimed and reused.

What does XL mean on a printer cartridge?

XL simply means high-capacity. An XL cartridge fits the same printer as the standard version but contains more ink. If you print regularly, XL cartridges work out cheaper per page and last significantly longer. We always let you know the XL option is available so you can make an informed choice.

Can you order in a cartridge you do not have in stock?

In most cases, yes. If your printer uses a less common cartridge that we do not have on the shelf, we can usually order it in within one to two working days. Call us on 01334 478866 and we will let you know honestly what is available and how long it will take.
