PS5 Repair in St Andrews. Get Back in the Game
Your PS5 is supposed to be the centre of your gaming setup, but instead it is overheating, showing no display, refusing to read discs, or will not power on at all. Sony’s own repair service means shipping your console away for weeks, paying a hefty fee, and losing your gaming time in the process. At Repair St Andrews, we repair PS5 consoles locally at our workshop on 1 City Rd. No shipping, no long waits. We have been fixing gaming hardware since 2011, and the PS5 is a machine we know inside and out. Bring it in and we will diagnose the problem and get you playing again.
Common PS5 Problems We Fix
Disc Drive Issues
The PS5 will not take a disc, makes clicking or grinding noises, or fails to read discs it accepted before. The disc drive laser, roller mechanism, or drive board may need repair or replacement. On the PS5, the disc drive is paired to the motherboard, so we repair the existing drive rather than simply swapping in a new one.
Overheating & Shutdowns
The PS5 turns off mid-game with an overheating warning, or the fans run at maximum speed constantly. After a year or two of use, the factory thermal paste dries out, dust blocks the heatsink fins, and liquid metal (on some models) can migrate. We strip, clean, and re-apply thermal compound properly.
No Power
The PS5 does not respond to the power button at all. This could be a faulty power supply, a blown fuse on the motherboard, or a more serious board-level fault. We trace the power delivery path and repair the specific component that has failed.
Wi-Fi / Bluetooth
No display output (HDMI failure). The PS5 powers on, the light bar is active, but your TV shows no picture. This is almost always a faulty HDMI port. A bent pin, a cracked solder joint, or a damaged HDMI encoder IC (the Panasonic MN864739 chip). We replace HDMI ports and repair encoder ICs with micro-soldering.
SSD Issues
Rest mode crashes and database errors. The PS5 crashes when entering or waking from rest mode, or repeatedly asks to rebuild the database. This can be a software issue, a failing SSD, or an unstable power supply. We diagnose whether it is hardware or firmware and fix accordingly.
// OUR PROCESS
Our PS5 Repair Process
We keep the process thorough so your PS5 is properly fixed, not just temporarily patched.
Fault Diagnosis
We connect your PS5 to our test setup. A known-good TV, HDMI cable, and power outlet. To reproduce the fault. We then open the console and inspect the motherboard under magnification for visual signs of damage: burnt components, cracked solder joints, liquid metal migration, or corrosion. We test the power supply voltages, HDMI output signal, and disc drive function systematically.
Precision Repair
PS5 repairs often involve micro-soldering work. HDMI port replacement requires removing the old port, cleaning the pads, and soldering a new port with precise alignment. Thermal work involves complete disassembly, cleaning old compound, applying fresh thermal paste or liquid metal, and reassembling with proper screw torque. Disc drive repairs mean working with the laser assembly and motor mechanism without disturbing the drive's motherboard pairing.
Extended Gameplay Testing
We do not just power it on and check the menu. We run actual games for an extended period, monitoring temperatures, checking display output quality (4K and HDR where applicable), testing disc reading with multiple titles, and verifying that rest mode and power cycling work correctly. Your PS5 leaves our workshop properly tested.

Turnaround Time
Most PS5 repairs are completed within two to four working days. Thermal cleaning and re-pasting can be done within one to two days. HDMI port replacements typically take two to three days, as the micro-soldering work requires precision and we run extended display tests afterward. More complex motherboard-level repairs may take up to five days. We will give you a clear timeline after diagnosis.
Pricing
PS5 repair costs vary by fault. A thermal service (cleaning and re-pasting) is one of the more affordable repairs. HDMI port replacement is mid-range, reflecting the precision micro-soldering involved. Disc drive repairs and motherboard-level work vary depending on the specific fault. Every repair costs significantly less than replacing the console, and we provide a diagnosis and quote before starting any work. Call 01334 478866 and describe the issue. We will give you a price indication straight away.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you fix the PS5 HDMI port, or does it need a new motherboard?
We fix the HDMI port itself. This is a micro-soldering repair where we remove the damaged port and solder a replacement directly onto the motherboard. If the HDMI encoder IC (the chip that processes the video signal) is also damaged, we can replace that too. There is no need to replace the entire motherboard. That would be unnecessarily expensive when the fault is a single component.
My PS5 is making a loud coil whine. Can you fix that?
Coil whine is an electrical noise caused by inductors vibrating under load. Some degree of coil whine is normal on PS5 consoles and is not a sign of a fault. However, if the noise is accompanied by overheating, performance issues, or shutdowns, there may be an underlying power delivery problem worth investigating. A thermal service can sometimes reduce overall noise levels, as quieter fans make coil whine more noticeable.
Will you lose my saved game data during the repair?
We take every precaution to preserve your data. Most PS5 repairs. HDMI, thermal service, disc drive. Do not touch the internal SSD where your saves are stored. If a repair does require SSD replacement or a factory reset, we will discuss this with you beforehand. We always recommend keeping your saves backed up to PS Plus cloud storage or a USB drive as a precaution.
Do you repair the PS5 Digital Edition as well?
Yes. The PS5 Digital Edition shares the same motherboard and HDMI system as the disc edition, so repairs for power issues, display faults, overheating, and controller connectivity apply equally. The only difference is there is no disc drive to repair on the Digital Edition.
How much does Sony charge for PS5 repair?
Sony’s out-of-warranty repair fees vary but are often in the range of 200 to 250 pounds, and the process requires shipping your console to their repair centre, which takes two to four weeks. Our prices are competitive with or lower than Sony’s, and we complete repairs locally within days rather than weeks.
Can you fix PS5 disc drive issues?
Yes. Disc drive repair is one of our most common PS5 jobs. Whether the drive will not accept discs, makes grinding noises, or simply refuses to read, we can diagnose and fix the laser assembly, roller mechanism, or drive board. Because the PS5 disc drive is paired to the motherboard, we repair the existing unit rather than swapping it out. Drop it off at 1 City Rd or call 01334 478866.
My PS5 overheats and shuts down. Can you fix that?
Almost certainly. Overheating shutdowns are usually caused by dried-out thermal paste, dust-clogged heatsinks, or migrated liquid metal. We strip the console down, clean everything, and reapply quality thermal compound. This brings temperatures back to safe levels and stops the mid-game shutdowns. It is a straightforward service we do regularly.
Can you upgrade my PS5's storage?
Yes. The PS5 has an internal M.2 expansion slot that accepts a standard NVMe SSD. We can supply and install a compatible drive, format it for the PS5, and have you up and running with extra storage the same day. If your existing internal SSD is failing, we can replace that too. Though it requires a fresh system install, so back up your saves first.
We also repair all gaming consoles, including Xbox and Nintendo Switch. See all our computer repair services in St Andrews.
