PC Repair in St Andrews. Desktops & Custom Builds Fixed

Whether it is a home desktop that will not boot, an office workstation running painfully slowly, or a custom-built gaming PC that is crashing under load, a broken PC disrupts your work, your entertainment, and your daily routine. You might be staring at a blue screen of death, hearing ominous clicking from the hard drive, or dealing with a machine that freezes every ten minutes. At Repair St Andrews, we have been diagnosing and fixing desktop PCs since 2011. Every brand, every build, every operating system. Bring it to our workshop at 1 City Rd, or call us and we will talk you through your options.

Common PC Issues We Fix

Storage Failure

PC will not boot or power on. If pressing the power button gives you nothing, or the fans spin briefly then stop, the fault could be the power supply unit, the motherboard, a faulty RAM stick, or a short somewhere in the system. We systematically test each component to find and fix the exact cause.

RAM Issues

Blue screen of death (BSOD). Windows blue screens can be caused by failing RAM, a corrupt hard drive, driver conflicts, overheating, or motherboard faults. We read the error codes, run hardware diagnostics, and identify whether the problem is hardware or software.

Power Supply

Slow performance. A PC that was fast three years ago but now takes minutes to load anything usually needs an SSD upgrade, more RAM, a malware clean, or a fresh Windows installation. Sometimes all of the above. We diagnose what is bottlenecking your system and recommend the most cost-effective fix.

Cooling & Noise

Overheating and shutdowns. Desktop PCs that overheat are usually suffering from dust-clogged fans, dried thermal paste on the CPU, a failed case fan, or inadequate cooling for the components installed. We clean, re-paste, and upgrade cooling to bring temperatures back to safe levels.

Display Problems

Hardware upgrades. Want more RAM, a bigger SSD, a new graphics card, or a better power supply? We advise on compatible components for your specific motherboard and install them properly, including BIOS updates and driver configuration.

// OUR PROCESS

Our PC Repair Process

We keep the process simple so your PC is back in your hands as quickly as possible.

Hardware and Software Diagnosis

We run a full diagnostic on your PC: power supply voltages, motherboard POST codes, RAM testing with MemTest, storage health checks (SMART data for hard drives and SSDs), CPU and GPU temperature monitoring under load, and a Windows event log review. This gives us a complete picture of what is working and what is not.

Targeted Repair or Upgrade

Based on the diagnosis, we fix the specific problem. Whether that is replacing a failed power supply, swapping out bad RAM, fitting a new SSD, cleaning and re-pasting the CPU cooler, or reinstalling Windows from scratch. If your PC would benefit from a performance upgrade, we will recommend it and let you decide.

System Testing and Optimisation

After the repair, we boot the system, run stress tests to verify stability, check all ports and peripherals are working, and optimise Windows settings for performance. We make sure your PC is running clean, stable, and as fast as its hardware allows before handing it back.

Turnaround Time

Most desktop PC repairs are completed within one to three working days. Simple fixes like power supply replacements, RAM upgrades, and SSD installations are often done same-day. More complex issues. Intermittent crashes that need extended stress testing, motherboard-level faults, or data recovery from a failing drive. May take three to five days. We will give you an estimated timeline when you bring the machine in.

Pricing

PC repair costs depend on the fault and any parts needed. Software fixes and optimisations are at the lower end of the scale. Hardware replacements depend on the component. A power supply or RAM upgrade is affordable, while a motherboard or GPU replacement costs more. We always quote before starting work so there are no surprises. Call 01334 478866 and describe the problem. We will give you a ballpark price over the phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you repair all PC brands, or just custom builds?

We repair everything. Off-the-shelf desktops from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, and Acer. Custom gaming builds. Office workstations. Home media PCs. Small form factor machines. All-in-one desktops. If it is a desktop computer, we can fix it. The only exception is Apple desktops. For iMacs and Mac Minis, see our iMac repair service.

Should I upgrade my old PC or buy a new one?

This is the question we get asked most often, and the answer depends on what you use it for. If your PC has a reasonably modern motherboard and CPU (Intel 6th generation or newer, or any AMD Ryzen), adding an SSD and more RAM can make it feel like new for a fraction of the cost of a replacement. If the motherboard and CPU are very outdated, upgrading individual parts becomes less cost-effective and a new build or purchase may be better value. We will give you an honest recommendation.

Can you build a custom PC for me?

Yes. We build custom PCs to order. Whether you need a gaming rig, a video editing workstation, a quiet home office machine, or a compact media centre. We will discuss your requirements and budget, recommend compatible components, build the system, install your operating system, and test everything before handover.

Can you transfer my data from my old PC to a new one?

Absolutely. We can transfer your documents, photos, music, bookmarks, email, and other personal files from your old PC to a new machine or a freshly installed operating system. We can also set up your applications and configure your settings to match your old setup as closely as possible.

Do you do on-site PC repairs?

We primarily work from our workshop at 1 City Rd, as we have all our diagnostic tools and parts here. For desktop PCs, bringing the tower to us is usually straightforward. You do not need to bring the monitor, keyboard, or mouse. If transporting the machine is genuinely difficult, give us a call and we will discuss what we can do to help.
