Laptop Keyboard Repair in St Andrews. Type Properly Again
A faulty laptop keyboard turns every task into a frustration. Keys that do not register, letters that repeat themselves, a spacebar that only works if you hit it dead centre, or an entire row that has gone dead after a coffee spill. You cannot write an essay, send an email, or even log in properly. An external USB keyboard is a temporary workaround, but it defeats the purpose of having a laptop. At Repair St Andrews, we repair and replace laptop keyboards for every major brand, and we have been doing it at 1 City Rd since 2011. Bring your laptop in and we will get you typing properly again.
Common Laptop Keyboard Problems We Fix
Stuck or Dead Keys
If specific keys no longer register when pressed, the membrane contacts or scissor mechanism underneath have failed. This is common on heavily used laptops where certain keys. Spacebar, enter, backspace. Take more punishment than others.
Liquid Damage
Spilled tea, coffee, water, or any liquid can short out keyboard circuits and corrode the key contacts. Sometimes individual keys stop working; sometimes the entire keyboard dies. The sooner you get it to us after a spill, the better the chances of saving the keyboard.
Unresponsive Keys
Keys that feel gummy, require extra force, or stick down after being pressed. This is often caused by debris under the key cap, spilled liquids that have dried, or a worn-out scissor mechanism that no longer snaps back cleanly.
Backlight Failure
If pressing a key once produces multiple characters (for example, typing "hello" produces "heellloo"), the key contact is bouncing due to wear or contamination. This is usually a hardware fault that a keyboard replacement resolves.
Full Keyboard Replacement
Individual key caps can pop off if struck hard, caught by a fingernail, or pulled off by children or pets. We can sometimes replace individual caps with matching parts, or replace the full keyboard if multiple caps are damaged.
// OUR PROCESS
Our Keyboard Repair Process
We keep the process simple so your device is back in your hands quickly.
Keyboard Diagnosis
We test every key on your laptop using diagnostic software that registers each keystroke, identifying exactly which keys are failing. We also check for liquid damage under the keyboard. Residue or corrosion on the motherboard can cause keyboard issues even after the keyboard itself has dried out. This tells us whether you need a keyboard replacement, a motherboard clean, or both.
Keyboard Replacement
Most laptop keyboards are secured with screws and connected via a ribbon cable to the motherboard. We remove the old keyboard, clean the mounting area, fit the replacement keyboard matched to your exact laptop model and keyboard layout (UK, US, or international), and connect the ribbon cable. On some models, the keyboard is accessed from the top; on others, the entire base panel must be removed.
Full Typing Test
After installation, we test every single key, the function key shortcuts, the backlight (if applicable), and any special keys like volume controls, brightness, or the fingerprint reader that may be integrated into the keyboard assembly. We make sure every key registers correctly with the right character and without repeating.

Turnaround Time
Laptop keyboard repairs are typically completed within one to three working days. The keyboard itself is usually a straightforward swap, but sourcing the correct replacement for your specific model and layout is the variable. Popular Dell, HP, and Lenovo models have widely available keyboards. Less common models, gaming laptops with RGB backlighting, or older machines may take a few extra days for parts sourcing.
Pricing
Keyboard replacement costs depend on your laptop brand, model, and whether the keyboard includes a backlight. Standard keyboards for business laptops are the most affordable. Backlit keyboards, gaming laptop keyboards with per-key RGB lighting, and keyboards integrated with the top case (common in some HP and Apple designs) cost more. We provide a diagnosis and quote before any work starts. Call 01334 478866 for a price on your specific model.
Frequently Asked Questions
My laptop keyboard stopped working after a spill. Can it be fixed?
Often, yes. The first thing we do after a liquid spill is assess whether the damage is limited to the keyboard or has reached the motherboard underneath. If only the keyboard is affected, a replacement fixes the problem completely. If liquid has reached the motherboard, we clean the corrosion and repair any damaged components. The key is acting quickly. If you have just spilled liquid, power the laptop off immediately, do not try to dry it with a hairdryer, and bring it to us as soon as possible.
Can you fix just one key, or does the whole keyboard need replacing?
If the issue is a broken or missing key cap, we can sometimes replace the individual cap and its scissor mechanism. However, if the problem is an unresponsive key due to a failed membrane contact, the entire keyboard needs replacing. Laptop keyboards are single units with all the key circuits printed on one membrane sheet. Replacing the full keyboard is the reliable, long-term fix.
Do you keep laptop keyboards in stock?
We source replacement keyboards for all major laptop models. They typically arrive within a day or two and are fitted the same day they arrive. Dell Inspiron and Latitude, HP Pavilion and ProBook, and Lenovo ThinkPad and IdeaPad keyboards are particularly quick to source. For less common models, it may take a couple of extra days. If your repair is urgent, call ahead and we can check lead times before you visit.
Will the replacement keyboard have a UK layout?
Yes. We always source keyboards with the correct layout for your region. For UK customers, that means a UK layout with the large enter key, the pound sign, and the correct placement of the hash, backslash, and at symbol. We can also source international keyboard layouts. With St Andrews being a university town, we regularly help foreign students and international customers who need keyboards in US, European, or other regional layouts. Just let us know what layout you need and we will source it.
Do replacement keyboards have backlighting?
If your original laptop keyboard had backlighting, we source a backlit replacement to match. Not all laptop models support keyboard backlighting, so if yours did not have it originally, adding it is not possible through a keyboard swap alone. We always match the replacement to your original specification. Same layout, same backlight capability, same connector type.
