A cracked MacBook screen makes your entire machine unusable. Whether you have dropped your MacBook, closed the lid on something, or the display has developed lines, dead pixels, or a bright white patch behind the LCD, you need it fixed properly. At Repair St Andrews, we replace MacBook screens quickly. Often same-day or next-day. Right here in St Andrews. No sending your MacBook away, no waiting weeks for a mail-in repair. We use quality replacement panels that match the original display. We have been repairing MacBooks at 1 City Rd since 2011, and screen repairs are one of the most common jobs we handle.
Common MacBook Screen Problems We Fix
Cracked Glass and LCD Damage
The most common issue we see. A drop or impact cracks the glass panel and damages the LCD underneath, causing spider-web cracks, black ink spots, or coloured lines across the display.
Retina Display Delamination
The anti-reflective coating on some MacBook Pro Retina screens (particularly 2013-2017 models) peels and flakes off, leaving permanent smudges and patches that cannot be cleaned.
Flexgate Backlight Failure
MacBook Pro models from 2016 to 2018 have a design flaw where the display backlight cable wears out from opening and closing the lid. The screen goes dark at the bottom, or the backlight fails entirely when opened past 40 degrees.
White Spots and Pressure Marks
If something pressed against the back of the lid (common in bags and rucksacks), it can create bright white pressure points on the LCD that are visible on dark backgrounds.
Flickering and Intermittent Display
This can be caused by a loose display cable connection, a failing GPU on older models, or a damaged display connector on the logic board.
// OUR PROCESS
Our Screen Repair Process
We keep the process simple so your device is back in your hands quickly.
Screen Diagnosis
We examine your MacBook to determine the exact cause of the display issue. Not every screen problem requires a full display replacement. Sometimes a loose cable, a backlight connector, or a GPU fault is the real culprit. We check the display panel, the flex cable, the backlight, and the logic board video output to make sure we are fixing the right thing.
Display Replacement
MacBook screens are precision assemblies that include the LCD panel, glass, backlight, and display housing. We carefully remove the damaged display assembly and fit a replacement panel matched to your specific MacBook model. For Retina displays, colour accuracy and resolution must match the original spec exactly.
Calibration and Testing
After fitting the new screen, we run display calibration checks for colour accuracy, brightness uniformity, and dead pixel testing. We also verify the backlight, ambient light sensor, True Tone (on supported models), and the display hinge tension to make sure the lid opens and closes smoothly.

Turnaround Time
Most MacBook screen repairs are completed within one to two working days. If we have the correct display panel in stock for your model, same-day repair is often possible. Less common models. Particularly older MacBook Airs or the 12-inch MacBook. May require parts to be ordered, which can add two to three days. We will always give you a clear timeline before starting any work.
Pricing
MacBook screen replacement costs vary depending on the model and generation. A MacBook Air screen is generally less expensive than a MacBook Pro Retina display, and newer models with Liquid Retina XDR panels cost more than older Retina screens. We do not charge for diagnosis, and we will give you an exact price before any work begins. Call 01334 478866 for a quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you repair just the glass, or does the whole screen need replacing?
On most modern MacBooks, the glass and LCD are fused together as a single assembly, so the entire display panel needs to be replaced. On some older MacBook Pro models (pre-Retina, before 2012), the glass was a separate layer that could be replaced independently. We will assess your specific model and always recommend the most cost-effective option.
Will the replacement screen look as good as the original?
Yes. We use quality replacement panels that match Apple’s original specifications for resolution, colour gamut, and brightness. On Retina models, you are getting the same 2560×1600 or 2880×1800 resolution as the original. We test every screen for dead pixels and colour accuracy before handing your MacBook back.
My MacBook screen is black but I can hear it running. Is the screen broken?
Not necessarily. A black screen with the machine running could be a backlight failure (common in Flexgate-affected models), a GPU fault, a display cable issue, or a logic board problem. We diagnose the exact cause before recommending a screen replacement. There is no point fitting a new display if the fault lies elsewhere.
How much does Apple charge for a MacBook screen replacement?
MacBook screen replacement pricing depends on the model, the screen technology (standard Retina vs Liquid Retina XDR), and whether we use a genuine Apple display or a quality compatible part. We will always quote you an exact price before starting any work. No hidden charges, no surprises. The price covers the screen, the labour, and the testing.
Will True Tone still work after a screen replacement?
On most models, True Tone requires the original display’s serial data to be paired with the logic board. With third-party replacements, True Tone may not function. This is an Apple software restriction, not a hardware limitation. The display itself will still be colour-accurate and look excellent. If True Tone is important to you, let us know when you bring your MacBook in and we will explain the options for your specific model.
Do you replace the full display assembly or just the glass?
For all Retina MacBooks (2012 onwards), we replace the full display assembly. That includes the glass, LCD panel, backlight, and the aluminium housing. This is the industry-standard approach because the layers are bonded together at the factory. It ensures the best result in terms of display quality, dust-free operation, and long-term reliability. On pre-Retina models where the glass is a separate layer, we can replace just the glass if the LCD underneath is undamaged.
Can you fix a MacBook screen with only partial damage?
If the damage is limited. Say a small crack in one corner, a single line across the display, or a localised pressure mark. The screen still needs replacing as a complete assembly on Retina models. There is no way to repair a cracked LCD panel or patch a section of the display. The good news is that the replacement gives you a fully restored screen that looks and performs like new. Bring it to us at 1 City Rd and we will give you an honest assessment and a quote.
