// IPHONE CHARGING PORT REPAIR

iPhone Charging Port Repair in St Andrews. Reliable Charging Restored

You plug your iPhone in at night and wake up to find it barely charged. Or you have to hold the cable at exactly the right angle for it to connect. Or it simply does not charge at all, no matter which cable or plug you try. A faulty charging port turns your iPhone into a ticking clock. Once the battery runs flat, you are completely stuck.

At Repair St Andrews, we fix iPhone charging ports every week. Sometimes it is a simple clean-out that takes ten minutes. Sometimes the port itself needs replacing. Either way, we diagnose the problem for free at our workshop on 1 City Rd, right beside the West Port, and most charging port repairs are done the same day.

Common iPhone Charging Port Issues

Lint and Debris Buildup

This is the most common cause of charging problems and the easiest to fix. Pocket fluff, dust, and fibres pack into the Lightning or USB-C port over months, preventing the cable from seating fully. A careful clean with the right tools often solves the problem completely.

Loose or Wobbly Connection

If the cable falls out easily or only charges when held at a certain angle, the port's internal contacts may be worn or bent. This happens naturally over time from daily plugging and unplugging.

No Charging Response at All

You plug the cable in and nothing happens. No charging icon, no vibration, nothing. This could be the port itself, the charging IC on the logic board, or in some cases a software glitch. We test systematically to identify the root cause.

Slow Charging

Your iPhone charges but takes hours longer than it should. This is often caused by corroded or dirty port contacts reducing the current flow.

Phone Only Charges Wirelessly

If wireless charging works fine but wired charging does not, the port hardware is almost certainly the problem.

// OUR PROCESS

Our Charging Port Repair Process

We keep the process simple so you know exactly what to expect when you walk through the door.

Diagnostic Check

First, we test your iPhone with a known-good cable and charger to rule out accessories. Then we inspect the charging port under magnification for debris, corrosion, or physical damage. We also run a diagnostic check on the charging circuit to confirm whether the port or the logic board's charging IC is at fault. This assessment is free and takes about ten minutes.

Clean or Replace

If the port is clogged with lint and debris, we carefully clean it using anti-static tools. No needles, no compressed air blasted directly into the connector. This is often all that is needed, especially on iPhones that live in trouser pockets. If the port itself is damaged. Corroded pins, a cracked housing, or worn contacts. We replace the entire charging port flex cable assembly. On most iPhone models, the charging port is a modular component on a flex cable that also carries the microphone and, on some models, the headphone jack. We replace the full flex assembly to ensure everything works properly.

Testing

After the repair, we test charging with both wired and wireless methods (where applicable), verify data transfer via USB, check the microphone and any other components on the flex cable, and confirm the port holds the cable securely without wobble.

Turnaround Time

A port cleaning takes about 15 minutes. A full charging port replacement takes about an hour, depending on the iPhone model. Most customers drop the phone off and come back to collect it. Walk-ins are welcome and most repairs are completed the same day.

We are open Monday to Friday 09:30 to 17:30 and Saturday 10:00 to 17:00. Call 01334 478866 to check parts availability for your model before you visit, or just walk in and we will take a look.

While your phone is in, we can also check your iPhone battery health. Many phones with charging issues also have aging batteries.

Charging Port Repair Pricing

Port cleaning is one of our most affordable services. A full port replacement costs more and varies by iPhone model. Newer models with USB-C ports tend to be slightly pricier than older Lightning models. We always diagnose the problem first and give you a clear quote before starting any work.

If it turns out you just need a clean, we will tell you. We are not going to replace a port that only needs the fluff pulled out of it.

For a quote, call 01334 478866 or come into the shop at 1 City Rd.

We also offer battery replacement and screen repair if your phone needs more than a port fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my charging port needs cleaning or replacing?

The quickest test is to shine a torch into the port and look for compacted lint or debris. If you can see fibres packed in at the bottom, a professional clean will likely fix the problem. If the port looks clean but still does not charge, or if you can see physical damage to the metal contacts inside, the port probably needs replacing. Either way, bring it in and we will diagnose it for free. There is no point guessing when we can tell you definitively in ten minutes.

Can I clean the port myself?

We would advise against it. The pins inside the Lightning and USB-C ports are extremely delicate. A fraction of a millimetre thick. Using a paperclip, needle, or toothpick risks bending or snapping these pins, which turns a simple cleaning job into a port replacement. If you must try at home, use a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush (like a new toothbrush) and be very gentle. But honestly, the safest option is to let someone with the right tools do it. Port cleaning at our shop takes minutes and is very affordable.

Will a charging port repair affect my data?

No. Replacing the charging port is a hardware repair that does not touch your data at all. Your photos, apps, messages, and settings remain exactly as they are. We do not need to access, reset, or erase anything on the phone. For more about keeping your data safe during liquid incidents, see our water damage repair page.

My iPhone charges intermittently. Is it the port or the cable?

It could be either. Cables wear out too, especially around the connector where they get bent repeatedly. Before assuming the port is faulty, try a different cable and a different wall adapter. If multiple cables all have the same intermittent problem, the port is almost certainly the culprit. When you bring the phone in, we test with our own known-good cables as the first step in diagnosis.

Is it cheaper to clean or replace the charging port?

In most cases, a port cleaning is significantly cheaper than a full replacement. It is one of our most affordable services. We always inspect the port first and will only recommend a replacement if cleaning will not solve the problem. There is no point replacing a perfectly good port when all it needs is the lint removed. We give you an honest diagnosis before any work begins.

Can you fix USB-C ports on newer iPhones?

Yes. We repair both Lightning and USB-C charging ports. The iPhone 15 and later models use USB-C, and the charging port flex assembly is a modular component that can be replaced the same way as Lightning ports. If your USB-C port is loose, not recognising cables, or not charging, bring it in and we will diagnose it for free.

My iPhone gets hot when charging. Is it the port?

Excessive heat during charging can be caused by a damaged charging port, a failing battery, or a combination of both. A corroded or partially short-circuited port can increase resistance and generate heat. We will diagnose whether the issue is the port, the battery, or the charging circuit on the logic board, and give you a clear quote before starting work.
